The BOLD Leadership Network: Empowering Black Male Educators and Transforming Communities
With less than 2% of educators identifying as Black males, the impact of this absence ripples through classrooms and communities.
Education is a powerful tool, but for too many Black students in the U.S., the presence of role models who look like them is alarmingly scarce. With less than 2% of educators identifying as Black males, the impact of this absence ripples through classrooms and communities. Research shows that just one Black teacher in elementary school can increase the likelihood of Black boys graduating and pursuing college by 39%. This is the mission of the BOLD Leadership Network: to fill those gaps, elevate Black male educators, and inspire meaningful change.
Led by the dynamic Damon Qualls and supported by passionate board members like Dr. Edward Anderson, Dr. Carlos Grant, and many others, the BOLD Leadership Network is transforming what leadership looks like in education. Their mission is clear: to educate, empower, and amplify the voices of Black male educators, fostering spaces where inclusion, equity, and empowerment thrive.
What Makes BOLD Unique?
The BOLD Leadership Network doesn’t just dream of change — they’re actively building it through four key pillars:
BOLD Conversations
Imagine a room filled with thought leaders and community members discussing race, equity, and education without barriers. Recently, I had the honor of photographing a powerful BOLD Conversation featuring Rhonda Rawlings, a renowned journalist and community advocate. These dialogues are more than conversations; they are sparks igniting systemic change.Building Future Leaders
Through their BOLD Leadership Fellowship, participants engage in leadership training, dive into immersive experiences, and work on impactful projects that transform schools and communities. This is more than a program — it’s a launchpad for change-makers.Creating Safe Spaces
Initiatives like Battle Buddies create essential spaces for Black male educators to share, connect, and feel valued. These affinity groups are vital for building a sense of belonging in communities where they often feel like the numerical minority.Customized Workshops and Training
From instructional coaching to fostering positive school climates, BOLD’s workshops equip educators and organizations with the tools they need to thrive. These aren’t just lessons — they’re life-changing strategies.

The recent BOLD Holiday Mixer and Bold Conversation in Greenville, SC, which I was privileged to photograph, exemplified the joy, connection, and shared commitment this network fosters.
