When Compassion Fails, Lives Are Lost
This week, I attended three nonprofit events, all facing the devastating impact of recent financial cuts. These organizations are lifelines for our community these programs focused on empowering educators, providing victim advocacy for survivors of sexual assault and abuse, and keeping families housed. Yet, their futures are at risk, and the consequences are heartbreaking.
One organization may lose 45% of its funding, forcing staff cuts that will leave victims without advocates to guide them through unimaginable pain. Another faces the reality that children’s educational environments will suffer, stripping them of the tools and passionate professionals they deserve. Worst of all, we’ve already lost two babies to homelessness, and yet programs that keep families housed are being threatened.
For years, I’ve donated my time, effort, and finances to organizations like these not for recognition, but because they matter. I’ve shown up, set up, and done whatever was needed because it had to be done. And yet, I am not capable of understanding how cutting funding for these essential services benefits society.
Where is the empathy? Where is the compassion? How can we justify sacrificing lives, education, and safety in favor of bureaucratic agendas?
We can’t sit idly by while everything burns. Lives are at stake. Futures are at stake. It's time to do more than watch. It’s time to demand better.
